A new gym is coming to Chicago this month and is set to be a big draw for people looking to get fit, according to the founder of the fitness club.
Skechers Stretch Fit, a gym and fitness training facility, is scheduled to open in the Loop at 6 a.m.
Wednesday, the company announced Tuesday.
The first of the three new gyms, Skechers Fitness, is set for an opening in the former Surgical Center on South Shore Drive.
It will be open from 10 a.c. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
It’s slated to open at 7 a.l.m.-7 p.l., Tuesday-Friday.
Skeptical of the idea that cardio is bad for health, Skeches founder and CEO, Justin Schulz, said the gym will focus on strengthening the hips and shoulders, a popular activity among older people.
“It’s about building muscle, not just getting stronger,” Schulz said in an interview.
Schulz said he’s not a fan of the conventional cardio machines used in gyms and has started to take a more dynamic approach to fitness.
He said he plans to add some more equipment, like stationary bikes and a bike, to make it easier to keep fit while traveling.
He said he wants Skechers to appeal to both genders, since there are many women who may not have the fitness or cardio of men, but are looking to do the workout.
“I feel like a lot of gyms out there are for men, and we want to make sure we’re not making that mistake,” Schulzes said.SKECHERS FITNESS CENTERS AVAILABLE NEXT MONTHSIn addition to Skechers Stretch, the new gym will be able to offer classes, workshops and classes at Skechers Fitness Center, a 3,200-square-foot building on South Michigan Avenue near the State Fairgrounds.
Schulzes is a Chicago native who moved to Chicago in 2009 from New York City.
He’s the founder and chief executive officer of the company that also offers a variety of fitness training programs, including Skechers Flex and Skechers Power, which combine a wide range of exercises with a fitness component.
The company is one of three that have announced plans to open gyms in Chicago, with others including the Blue Star Fitness Center, and the Bexley Gym, which is opening in a former industrial building on North Lincoln Street.
The new Skechers fitness facility, which will include a fitness center and fitness classes, will be a hotbed of activity, Schulz told the Chicago Tribune.
“You’ve got people doing yoga, running, elliptical machines, lifting weights, stretching, yoga and lots of different things that you wouldn’t think you’d be able for in a gym,” he said.
“There’s going to be something for everyone.”
Schulz is the owner of a company called SKECHES Fitness, which has offices in Chicago and San Francisco.
The company offers more than 30 fitness programs in Chicago.
Schulders fitness center will be located on South Sider Street in the old South Side industrial area of the Loop, which had been abandoned in recent years due to the city’s economic downturn.SCHULZS FITNESS COMPANY SCHULTS STRETCH FIT PROGRAMS, AYCE FITNESS, LIFT, METER, EXERCISE INSTRUCTIONSSchulz’s fitness gym is the latest in a growing line of fitness and fitness equipment companies that have sprouted up in the past several years, as the cost of equipment has increased in recent decades.
The Chicago Tribune first reported that the city was eyeing a new gym in 2016, citing city officials.
Schultz said he is not planning on building a new fitness facility in Chicago anytime soon, but plans to be active on the Chicago city and suburban sides.
“We want to be here, we want Chicago to be this hotbed for exercise and fitness, but it’s also going to take time,” he told the Tribune.SUNDAY, OCT.
2Skeches will open a gym at the former medical center in the South Side neighborhood of Chicago.
The SKEACHES gym is slated to reopen in the city on Oct. 2.
The gym, located at 651 S. Michigan Ave., is scheduled for an open-air workout space, Schulze said in a statement.
The building, which was once home to a clinic for terminally ill patients, is slated for a remodel.
The old Surgical Centre, which closed in 2014, is located at 3151 S. South Shore Dr. in the neighborhood.
